This is a short book about his experience out on the Horton River with his friend who brings a remote phone. Ted has a great writing style that allows his readers to laugh along with him and also feel his uneasiness when talking on the remote phone while he is out in the wild.
He is personable, knowledgeable, and a gentle spirit that offers his wonderful perspective so that we may explore and learn to be in harmony with nature. I would also highly recommend any of his other books especially Merle's Door.
Returning back to civilization was hard and I felt disappointed that the trip ended but I believe that was the point, to know the actual difference. Also, Ted has a couple books coming out in 2010 and I can hardly wait.
Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of Ted Kerasote. I felt like I was out there with him experiencing the beauty and surprises along the way.
It is truly my favorite.
All of Ted Kerasote's books are must reads. Ted Kerasote unzips himself down the middle and bares his feelings in his writing from the depths of his soul. OUT THERE was Ted Kerasote living my husband's fantasy and I finding myself wanting to experience the same adventure. He is easily the best author wrting today and anyone who misses any of his books has missed a part of a life most of only dream about. A voracious reader I discovered Ted Kerasote through the now legendary eyes of his dog Merle in MERLE'S DOOR in July of 2007. Easily bored, I have never read any book more than once but must confess in 1 1/2 years I have read Merle 4 times.and I know I will read it again one day. It is magical.
Well I was not dissappointed with this book. He has inspired me to see nature and be apart of it again. It takes you away. Every sentence, every word was descriptive. I too used to camp and canoe until work and worries kept me with my nose to the computer or exhausted from work stretched out on the couch.
It feels like you are right there with him enjoying the same visual treat, in the canoe, watching the wildlife or lying in the tent while the rain pours from the skys. I am going to plan another camp/canoe trip soon and enjoy it all over again. And also to realize it is up to us to protect it. Breathes new life into you, inspires you to enjoy what God has given us and to take care of it. This guy is a TRUE nature lover. Very enjoyable and a pleaseure to read. After that wonderful book I wanted to read more about the writer and see what else he had up his sleeve.
What a joy to read. I love the way this guy writes. Merle's Door is still my favorite, but this book comes in second:)I think his next book will come in third:):):) I want more Ted Kerasote books. Well it started with Merle's Door. He does not waste words. If you like nature, being a part of it or just reading about it, this book is for you.
It did read like an article in Outside magazine, which I believe is part of the author's background. This book was chosen for our book discussion group which was a good choice because it was easy to finish in time for the discussion and enjoyable. It does take you "Out There" which is what I liked about the book.
He does not enlarge his subject to include any of the larger insights or issues, of which there are many imbedded in the subject of man and nature. Kerasote can't hold a candle to Petersen. Kerasote adds little to the discussion. Ordered this because it was suggested by Amazon as a book that might be of interest. This because I am so very fond of David Petersen's writing. From Melville to Petersen, we have struggled to describe and comprehend our relationship to society and nature.
